Why do we have so many problems with Muslims but not Buddhists? Why are we constantly urged to tolerate and co-exist with Muslims but not Buddhists? Western culture isn't more similar to Buddhism than Islam. So why doesn't anybody feel the need to convince us to tolerate Buddhists?
Could it be that the tenets of the religions themselves are dramatically different?
I like to use Buddhism for comparison because if you are in a Western country and talk about Christianity or Judaism, it doesn't work as an example, because most people consider Western culture to be a "Judeo-Christian" culture. Buddhism is outside of the normal biases, so can be used as a good comparison.
Yes, Damien. That is the conclusion this question will help sink deep into our friends' understanding of the situation. They can start to notice that whenever we are being persuaded to co-exist, it is about Islam. Truly peaceful religions have no need to convince anyone to tolerate them in an open society.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the thing that changes peoples' minds about Islam is a simple question like this. It starts a chain of observations and recollections and deductions that can allow them on their own to realize Islam is different than most other religions in important ways.
Do buddhists say this?
ReplyDeletehttp://weaselzippers.us/2011/08/07/london-islamist-david-cameron-will-get-on-his-hands-and-knees-and-pay-us-the-jizya-tax-queen-elizabeth-and-the-whore-kate-middleton-will-wear-the-niqab/
"... we are the ones who want to work for the sake of Allah, to establish the manifestation of Islam, and make sure that David Cameron comes on his hands and knees, and give us the jiziya – yeah, that’s right – and cover up all the women and put a niqab on their faces, including Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton, the whore, the fornicator."
The only thing more bizarre is the silence and moral cowardice of The Western Lemmings - PCs and The Left!
Buddhist doctrine is non-violent.
ReplyDeleteWhereas, when the Ottoman Empire performed genocide against Armenians, Greeks and other non-muslims its actions were justifiable in terms of the Koran.

Hence the Turks & Kurds were only behaving as good muslims subjugating the infidels.
No need for anyone to convince us to be more tolerant to Buddhists!
(PS Unlike the Turks & Kurds who were acting as good muslims, the acts of the Japanese of World War 2 were not consistent with Buddhist doctrine).
Would a Buddhist say this?:
ReplyDelete"The spokesman for Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which portrays itself as a moderate Islamic movement, has called for execution and hand amputations if the Mubaraks are found guilty of murder and corruption.
“If a man has stolen millions of the state’s money, the penalty is that I must cut off his hand,” said Mahmoud Ghuzlan, a professor of biochemistry at Zagazig University. “There is no argument. These are God’s words.”

A professor of biochemistry demanding AMPUTATIONS, never mind a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood!?
Not even science can overcome the Poison of Islam.
Buddhists do not do "wala wa bara"!
ReplyDeleteRaymond Ibrahim's article below explains what this is in full:
http://www.aina.org/news/2011089044705.htm
"Built atop numerous Koran verses and backed by Sharia, wala requires Muslims to be loyal to fellow Muslims ... bara, requires Muslims to disassociate themselves from non-Muslims--to have enmity for and be disloyal to them"
Buddhists do not do this either:
ReplyDelete"Muslim Extremists in India Attack, Threaten Christian Women Convert from Islam, others threatened with burning."

The latest suicide bombing of the UN in Nigeria by Islamists is just further evidence as to why no one is trying to convince us to be more tolerant of Buddhists:

Slightly oblique to the topic, but one thing some Buddhists understood/stand, at least as the legend goes, is that one can be peaceful internally, but such has nothing to do with the outside world and the way to remain at peace with oneself is to be so highly trained that one can defend oneself and others and prevail so well that one doesn't even have to be attached to the violence such requires at times.
ReplyDeleteThere's two meanings to the word 'tolerate'. There's to accept; but another meaning is to 'put-up-with'. As in the sentence:
ReplyDelete"You have to tolerate a tooth-ache until you get to the dentist". Doesn't mean i accept it!
It's also said that Muslims,'tolerate other religions'...Well I don't want to live in a society where a segmemt of the population thinks of me as,someting to be put-up-with.
